Short answer: a good red light panel publishes its output in mW/cm² at a stated distance, measured on a spectrometer rather than a solar meter; covers 660nm red and 850nm near-infrared as a minimum; is tested to a standard the maker will name; and reaches you from UK stock so the advertised price is the price you pay. This guide explains how to check each of those, then compares the panels UK buyers most often shortlist using each brand's own published data.
The number everyone inflates
Irradiance — the light energy reaching your skin, in mW/cm² — is the number panels are sold on. It is also the easiest number to overstate, because it depends entirely on how it was taken.
A solar or photovoltaic meter reads roughly twice as high as a spectrometer on LED light. The spectrometer is the correct instrument. So a brand can print a figure that is technically real and practically meaningless.
You can see the gap in brands' own data. BlockBlueLight leads with "up to 167mW/cm²" on the PowerPanel MEGA, then states an average of 87 mW/cm² at the same distance from spectrometer readings. On the smaller PowerPanel PRO the same two numbers are 160 and 68. Notice what happens: the panel doubles from 150 LEDs to 300, the honest figure climbs 68 to 87, and the headline figure barely moves, 160 to 167. The big number has stopped measuring anything useful.
Three questions settle it. What is the figure? At what distance? On what instrument? A panel that answers all three is being straight with you.

Wavelengths: what actually matters
Two wavelengths carry most of the research. Red at around 660nm is absorbed near the surface and is the one associated with skin. Near-infrared at around 850nm travels further into tissue, which is why it is the one discussed for muscles and joints. A panel offering both covers the ground that matters.
Beyond that, extra wavelengths add flexibility rather than necessity. The Dermfix RLF panels carry seven — 480, 630, 660, 810, 830, 850 and 1060nm — selectable from the touchscreen or the supplied remote, so a single device can be set for surface work or deeper work. Useful, but not a reason to choose a panel on its own. Judge measured output and honesty first.
How we measure, and why we publish it per model
Each RLF panel is measured with a spectrometer at 15cm, on axis, at the centre of the panel. The reading for that specific model is published on its own product page: 89 mW/cm² on the RLF1500, 90 on the RLF3000, 92 on the RLF6000.
What we do not do: quote a reading taken at the LED surface, which inflates the figure dramatically; add several wavelengths together to reach a bigger total; or publish one headline number across a range of different-sized panels. When comparing two panels, check the distance first. Six inches is 15cm, so those two are directly comparable. A reading at 30cm and one at 15cm are not.
Matching the panel to the job

A larger panel treats more of you at once, so sessions are shorter. That is the practical difference between sizes, not a difference in the light itself. The advertised price is not always the price at the till. We took each panel to checkout with a UK delivery address on 19 August 2026 and recorded what came up.

What the comparison shows
On the honest number, the good panels are close. Measured on a spectrometer, the serious 300-LED panels sit in the eighties: 89, 87, 86.4. Nobody is twice as good as anyone else. Any brand claiming otherwise is quoting a different instrument.
Two of the seven publish no spectrometer figure at all. HELIOS quotes >135 mW/cm² at 6 inches without naming an instrument. PlatinumLED's page copy carries no irradiance number in text at all — only charts and badges. You cannot compare what has not been disclosed.
The import VAT trap, in the seller's own words
This is the most expensive thing a UK buyer can miss, and it is worth spelling out because the sums are large.
PlatinumLED's UK checkout shows £973.63 with free express shipping. Their own UK shipping information page explains why that figure looks competitive: UK orders ship from their EU warehouse, and the UK VAT of 20% will be due and payable upon delivery
to the courier, because a shipment from the EU is an import into the UK.
So the £973.63 is a pre-VAT number. Add 20% and the real cost is about £1,168 — roughly £195 to settle before the courier will release the box, before any brokerage or handling fee the carrier adds on top.
There is a simple way to spot this at any checkout. A UK-fulfilled order shows a tax line in the total: Red Light Rising's checkout states "Including £287.50 in taxes", BlockBlueLight's states "Including £202.98 in taxes". PlatinumLED's total shows no tax line at all. If the tax line is missing, the VAT has not been charged yet — which means you are going to pay it later.
Two other practical consequences of an EU-to-UK route: their own page notes that processing takes longer than normal because of the import filings, and the parcel is handed from DHL to Royal Mail for final delivery, so tracking moves between two carriers. And watch the last step generally. BlockBlueLight adds £6.95 postage and pre-selects a £41 insurance product you have to notice in order to decline.
Wavelength coverage varies more than price. The RLF1500 carries seven selectable wavelengths. The HELIOS 2, at almost exactly the same price, carries two.
The safety standard almost nobody names
Every panel on the market carries a CE mark of some kind. The question is what it was tested against.
EN 60335-2-27 is the standard covering electrical appliances that expose human skin to optical radiation — ultraviolet, infrared and visible light. It is the standard that applies to what a red light panel actually does to a person, as distinct from electrical-safety and electromagnetic-compatibility testing, which is about the appliance itself.
Dermfix panels are tested and certified to EN 60335-2-27. Reviewing the published certification wording of the UK-available panels above, we could not find another that names it. What appears instead is bare "CE", CE with a directive rather than a standard, IEC 60601 (the general standard for medical electrical equipment, not the optical-radiation-on-skin one), or FDA registration — which is a listing rather than a clearance, and is not a UK requirement in any case.
If you are putting a high-output light source against bare skin several times a week, it is fair to ask which standard the manufacturer tested that against. It is a reasonable question to put to any brand you are considering, including us.
"Not a medical device" — read the small print
Several panels sold in the UK carry a line stating the device is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition. That wording is legally sensible and we are not criticising it. But understand what it tells you: the device is a wellness product, and the manufacturer is not claiming otherwise.

Buying a red light panel in the UK after Brexit
A panel dispatched from outside the UK can arrive with import VAT and duty payable before the courier will release it, plus a customs delay. Some overseas brands pre-pay this at checkout, which is fairer but still means you are paying it. Others state plainly that it falls to you on delivery.

Where a panel is dispatched from also determines what is fitted to the end of its cable. Common questions
What is the best red light panel for home use?
The one whose measured output, size and price match what you actually want to treat. For most home users a half-body panel around 300 LEDs with a spectrometer-measured output in the 80s mW/cm² at 15cm is the sensible middle. Larger panels shorten sessions; they do not change the light.
How do I know what red light panel to buy?
Work through four checks. Does it publish an output figure with a distance and an instrument? Does it cover 660nm and 850nm? Does the maker name the safety standard it was tested to? And does the checkout total match the advertised price, or does VAT and postage appear at the last step?
Do I pay import VAT on a red light panel bought in the UK?
Only if it ships from outside the UK. A panel dispatched from an EU warehouse is an import, so UK VAT at 20% becomes payable to the courier on delivery, often with a handling fee on top. A panel dispatched from UK stock has VAT already in the advertised price. Check the seller's shipping page for where the goods actually leave from — a .co.uk domain does not tell you.
Will a red light panel bought in the UK come with a UK plug?
That depends on where the unit is dispatched from rather than where the website is registered. Dermfix panels are sent from UK stock as UK-specification units, so the plug on the lead is the standard three-pin type and the panel can go into an ordinary 13A socket as it comes. Equipment sent in from outside the UK may be supplied with a two-pin plug and a travel adaptor, so ask the seller which plug is on the unit before you order.
Are red light panels actually effective?
Photobiomodulation — the effect of red and near-infrared light on tissue — has a substantial research literature, and we summarise individual studies elsewhere on this site with the source named each time. What a panel can do for you depends on wavelength, dose and consistency of use. Be sceptical of any retailer promising a specific outcome, ourselves included.
Is buying a red light panel worth it?
That depends on whether you will use it regularly, and on what a comparable number of clinic sessions would cost you. A panel is a one-off purchase with a rated LED life measured in tens of thousands of hours. The wrong panel — one with no honest output figure — is poor value at any price.
How much output do I need at 15cm?
A measured 40–100 mW/cm² at 15cm is a sensible range for home use. More output mainly shortens the session. What matters is that the figure is honestly measured at a stated distance.
660nm or 850nm — which do I need?
660nm red is absorbed nearer the surface; 850nm near-infrared reaches deeper tissue. Most capable panels carry both, which is why that pair is the baseline to look for.
How far should I sit from a red light panel?
Typically 15–30cm. Closer means more intensity and a shorter session. Always check which distance a quoted output figure refers to.
Is a higher LED count or wattage better?
Not on its own. Both are component counts, not performance. The BlockBlueLight figures above make the point: doubling the LED count moved the honest measured output by under 30%, while the headline solar-meter figure barely moved at all.
Do I need eye protection with a red light panel?
The panels are bright. Use the eye protection supplied, or avoid looking directly into the LEDs during a session.
Can I use a red light panel in a bathroom or sauna?
The standard RLF panels are IP20 rated, so keep them in dry rooms away from water and steam.
Is red light therapy the same as UVB?

What does a good red light panel cost in the UK?
